My stay at the art residency in Newfoundland was a profoundly captivating experience, primarily centered around my fascination with the ocean. The rugged beauty of the coastline and the mesmerizing waves became the focal point of my artistic exploration.

The artist residency in Pouch Cove Foundation https://www.pouchcove.org, nestled in the same location as an James Baird Art Gallery, provided me with a unique opportunity to live and create amidst a thriving artistic community. The gallery’s proximity added an extra layer to my experience, allowing me to draw inspiration not only from the natural beauty of the surroundings but also from the diverse artworks created by fellow residents.

Living in such close quarters with artists from North and South America created a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. The exchange of ideas and cultural perspectives was invaluable, turning the residency into a truly international platform for artistic expression. The daily interactions with fellow residents, each bringing their unique artistic background and influences, expanded my creative horizons in unexpected ways.

The residency coordinators played a pivotal role in fostering this collaborative environment. They facilitated gatherings, discussions, and shared experiences that further enriched my stay. Engaging with artists from different parts of the Americas broadened my understanding of art’s universal language and its ability to transcend cultural boundaries.

What made this experience even more profound for me was the context of my personal journey. After my son underwent two years of chemotherapy for leaukemi, the residency became a healing retreat—a much-needed break that allowed me to step away from the challenges of the past and reconnect with my life’s craft. The ocean, with its therapeutic presence, became a symbol of renewal and strength, and the artistic community provided a supportive space for this rejuvenation.

The rhythmic dance of the waves, combined with the diverse and dynamic artistic community, became a powerful source of inspiration. The collaborative spirit among residents added depth to my exploration of the ocean’s beauty, influencing not only my technical approach but also the conceptual underpinnings of my work.

I spent countless hours capturing the dynamic interplay of light and water, immersing myself in the nuances of the waves. The residency not only afforded me the time and space to observe the intricate details of the ocean but also provided the necessary tranquility to translate these experiences into my artwork.

Through my lens, I documented the raw energy and untamed beauty of the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland, collecting a wealth of visual material that will undoubtedly influence my future paintings. The sheer magnitude of the ocean’s presence instilled a sense of awe and reverence, and I often found myself contemplating the timeless connection between nature and art.

In essence, my time in Newfoundland was a profound encounter with the ocean’s grandeur and a celebration of artistic diversity. The waves, with their graceful ballet and unrestrained power, have left an indelible mark on my artistic journey. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to have immersed myself in this elemental force and to have shared this transformative experience with a community of artists from around the Americas. It was an international platform that expanded my artistic perspective, and I’m truly thankful for that opportunity to the Pouch Cove Foundation and generous person Jaims Baird.

I’m excited to share that my work is now available through James Baird Gallery on ARTSY, a significant milestone that emerged from the connections fostered during my residency in Pouch Cove. This platform not only expands the reach of my art but also opens new avenues for dialogue and engagement with a broader audience.

For those eager to explore my artistic journey further, my work remains accessible through my website and, now, at James Baird Gallery on ARTSY. This dual presence allows art enthusiasts to experience the evolution of my craft both in the virtual realm and at the esteemed gallery.
